Judging Diamonds
The carat weight measures the mass of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to two hundred milligrams. If all else is similar between two stones, the worth of a diamond gets larger exponentially in regards to carat weight because bigger diamonds are harder to come by and more desirable for use as gemstones. If you invest in quality rather than quantity, you will never be disappointed. High standards of quality are a reflection of character. More important than the size of the diamond is the brilliance and the light that it casts.
Like water shining through a crystal clear glass of water, a diamond that is perfect is free of inclusions or imperfections. Inclusions are tiny fractures or trace minerals that have been present in the stone since its formation in the earth and may appear cloudy. Iinclusions may be crystals of a foreign material or another diamond crystal. The number, size, color, relative location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions can all affect the relative clarity of a diamond.
A diamond should be cut so that light reflects down into it and back up through the many facets. If a diamond is cut too shallow or too deep, light passes through the facets and down rather than being refracted back up to the admiring eye. The quality of a diamond's cut is widely considered the most significant of the aspects considered important in determining the beauty of a diamond. It is commonly acknowledged that a well-cut diamond can appear to be of much larger carat weight, and have clarity and color that appear to be of better grade than they actually are. The skill with which a diamond is cut determines its ability to reflect and refract light.
Proportion refers to the angles and relative measurements of a polished diamond. More than any other feature, proportions determine a diamond's optical properties. Studies have shown that table size, crown angle, and pavilion depth have a dramatic effect on a diamond's appearance.
Diamond History
Diamonds were discovered in India in 500 B.C., and the name "diamond" comes from the Greek word adamas, meaning unconquerable or invincible. Since ancient Greece, diamonds and diamond jewelry have been the traditional symbol of love, and the ancients believed they were hardened dewdrops, splinters from the stars or a form of crystallized lightning.
Diamonds are the hardest substance known to human beings, and are made of a crystallized carbon that has unique powers of light reflection. They are the purest of all gemstones since they are composed of one single element. Diamonds have been valued as gemstones for ages and have become more and more popular since the 1800’s. The Diamond is the birthstone of those born in April and the anniversary gemstone for the 10th and 60th years of marriage.
