Diamond History

Diamonds that are mined today were born more than 100 million years ago. Highly pressurized carbon formed this valuable mineral in the earth at depths of over 150 kilometers and at temperatures greater than 10,000 degrees Celsius. In dramatic geological events within the earth's core, melting fluids far beneath the Earth’s surface were violently ejected, causing volcanic eruptions. These explosions created conical pipes filled with kimberlite, or hardened volcanic rock. Once the original volcanic cone was removed by gradual erosion, the kimberlite pipes containing diamonds were exposed.

Diamonds have been valued as gemstones for ages. They were used as religious icons in India over 2,500 years ago. Diamond drill bits and engraving tools also date back to ancient human history. Diamonds have become more and more popular since the 1800’s because of improved cutting and polishing techniques and an increase in the quantities available. Growth in the world economy and innovative and successful advertising campaigns have also helped increase their popularity.

Judging Diamonds

Diamonds are judged using the “4 - Cs”: cut, clarity, color, and carat.

Clarity is the measure of internal defects of a diamond called inclusions, which may include crystals of a foreign material or another diamond. They could also be structural imperfections like tiny cracks that appear cloudy. The number, size, color, relative location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions will all affect the clarity of a diamond.

Carat weight measures the mass of a diamond. One carat is a fifth of a gram or two hundred milligrams. If all else is equal, the worth of a diamond increases exponentially in regards to carat weight because bigger diamonds are rarer and more desirable for use as gemstones.

Diamonds do not show their beauty as rough stones; instead, they must be cut and polished to exhibit the characteristic fire and brilliance. Diamonds are cut into a variety of shapes that are designed to accentuate these features.

The quality of a diamond's cut is widely considered the most important of the 4 - Cs in determining the beauty of a diamond. The skill with which a diamond is cut determines its ability to reflect and refract light. Indeed, it is commonly acknowledged that a well-cut diamond can appear to be of greater carat weight, clarity and better color than they actually are.
