Diamonds have a history as old and captivating as any ever told. It’s permeated with mystery, myths, and fascinating facts. The name "diamond" comes from the Greek word for "unconquerable". Given its hardness, it's well named. Kings from India and China to Egypt and Rome valued a diamond’s actual and symbolic strength.The Chinese honored the diamond as a peerless stone cutting and engraving tool, and it was used by only the richest and noblest of men.

Up until the 18th century, nearly all diamonds came from India. Then came massive discoveries of diamond deposits in Brazil and South Africa. Historically, diamonds were bartered along two routes that ended in Europe. Starting from India, traders followed a land route that led to Constantinople. From there, they were shipped to Italian cities. The other route imported diamonds by water through the Saudi Peninsula and then to Europe from Egypt.
