A Diamond's Color

Color is determined by a specific industry scale. The brilliance of a diamond’s sparkle is affected by the presence or absence of color. For example, a diamond is considered colorless or almost colorless if it is graded "D" through "J". These diamonds are considered an excellent value. They appear colorless to the bare eye, unless they are compared with diamonds of even higher color grade. Diamond experts make sure there is a certified color comparison before attempting to make a fair evaluation, showing just how hard differences in color grades are to detect with the naked, untrained eye. Very slight color differences can be very important to determine the rarity of a diamond, but are never a crucial factor in determining its beauty. A Diamond's Clarity

Traditionally, a clarity scale has eleven grades. The top eight grades have no flaws that the naked eye can see. The differences in clarity can only be seen with a powerful microscope. In other words, a flawless diamond is no more beautiful to the unaided human eye than a grade in the middle of the scale. Extremely understated differences in clarity are important to determine a gemstone’s rarity, but only affect beauty when in the very low end of the scale.

A Diamond's Carat Weight

A single carat is divided into 100 points, which means that 50 points equals a half-carat. While the weight of a diamond is important, it doesn't necessarily influence the perceived size of a diamond. If you invest in quality rather than quantity, you will never be disappointed. High standards of quality are a reflection of character. More important than the size of the diamond is the brilliance and the light that it casts.

A Diamond's Cut

A diamond with facets cut only a few degrees out of alignment can result in a poorly performing stone. For a round brilliant cut, there is a balance between "brilliance" and "fire." A well-executed round brilliant cut should reflect light upwards and make the diamond have a white appearance when viewed from the top. An inferior cut will produce a stone that appears dark at the center and in some extreme cases the ring settings may show through the top of the diamond as shadows.
