For more than ninety years and three generations, the Morgan Jewelers' family has continued a tradition of providing personal and professional service.
The Beginning
Nate Morgan, Sr. arrived in the United States from Europe in 1900. His destination was Salt Lake City, Utah, where his father's friend owned a pawnshop and agreed to employ Nate. His duties were to provide general assistance and handle the mail shipments in and out of the shop. In a little over a year, he became the store manager. Mr. Morgan saved most of the money he earned and in 1914 he and a friend purchased a store in Burley, Idaho. They eventually closed their shop and opened a store in Pocatello, Idaho.
Service is the Key
Mr.Morgan was always a very customer service oriented businessman. He hired a goldsmith and a watchmaker to provide all the necessary services for his customers. This tradition has continued throughout the years and is a major contributor to Morgan Jewelers' success.
In the early years, the railroads were one of the nation's largest businesses. They employed nearly ten percent of all industrial workers. Pocatello was a main hub for the Union Pacific Railroad. All railroad employees in the area had to have their railroad watches inspected and calibrated by the official watch timer in order to keep the trains running on time.
Morgan Jewelers' became the official inspector for the railroad. Mr. Morgan knew the railroad had strict rules for timepiece accuracy, so he set up a unique arrangement whereby railroad employees could have the calibration expenses deducted from their paycheck. Workers could keep up on the maintenance of their timepieces on a regulated basis, even if they didn't have the funds available at the time of service.
Building the Business
Mr.Morgan requested and received authorization to sell jewelry items to the employees and have payments deducted directly from their paycheck. Word spread among the employees and the store had more customers than it could handle. Morgan Jewelers' moved to a larger location and began selling to all customers. The sign on the store read, "Nate Morgan Jewelers, Yours Today, a Year to Pay." Morgan's was one of the first stores in the west to offer merchandise with a payment plan.
