Finding the Right Diamond
Diamonds are multi-faceted – full of brilliance but complicated in design. As you search for the right diamond for your loved one, you'll be much more successful if you know what to look for.
The first decision to make will probably be the shape. Almost everyone has a personal preference, and it is one of the first features you'll notice. The most popular shape is the round diamond, which accents the diamond’s natural fire and shine. The princess diamond is the second most popular and has a square shape that yields a magnificent brilliance. After that, there is still a variety of options, from the teardrop shape of the pear to the double-pointed shape of the marquise. Ask your jeweler to explain all of the choices available.
After choosing the right shape, you’ll want to find the right cut. Cut is often mistaken for shape, but they are very distinct. The cut impacts the fire of the diamond – the way the light bends to bring out a diamond’s brilliance. Finding an ideal cut that isn't too shallow or deep will bring an exquisite shine to any diamond.
As diamonds form beneath the earth, they sometimes develop birthmarks, which are called inclusions. The fewer the inclusions, the less they will affect the passage of light throughout the gemstone; this determines the clarity of the stone. Be sure to ask your jeweler how a diamond rates on the store’s clarity scale.
Color also affects the passage of light. The less color the diamond has, the more the light can shine through.
The last factor is carat weight. Carats, which are divided further into points, don't necessarily measure value; two diamonds of the same weight can sell at very different prices.
The Story of Harry Richie's Jewelers
Harry Ritchie’s embodies the entrepreneurial spirit of America. Family owned since 1956, Harry Ritchie’s Jewelers arose from the dreams of a husband and wife, looking to make a better life for themselves and their children. Harry and Jerry Ritchie started their careers at a family jewelry shop, and after introducing flexible credit options to make high quality diamonds more affordable, the couple decided to open their own store. On opening day, a line of customers curled around the block, and nothing has changed since.
The couple’s children and grandchildren now manage the business and continue the company’s reputation for quality customer service. Harry would often say, “My ultimate goal is for people to leave my store with smiles on their faces.” And at Harry Ritchie’s Jewelers, that’s exactly what you’ll do. Come to our location at Boise Town Square to see what this family tradition has in store for you!
