How Diamonds Are Judged
Most often diamonds are evaluated by their color, cut, clarity and carat. We'd like to offer our assistance in explaining what these factors mean to you as a potential diamond purchaser.
The cut of a diamond means the angles and proportions that the gemstone is shaped as. A well-cut diamond internally reflects light from one facet to another and disperses and reflects it through the top of the stone. The result is a display of brilliance and fire, which makes the diamond more desirable than deep or shallow-cut diamonds. Cut also refers to the shape of a diamond. It can be round, square, pear, or heart, for example.
Diamonds range in color from completely clear to different shades of yellow. Warmer colored diamonds are particularly desirable when set in yellow gold. Icy winter whites look stunning set in white gold or platinum. Color differences can be extremely subtle. It is hard to see the difference between slightly differing grades. Colorless stones are valued for their rarity. Color, however, ultimately comes down to a person's taste. The term color means the degree to which a diamond is colorless.
When people use the term carat they often confuse the size of a diamond to its actual meaning, the measure of weight. A carat equals 200 milligrams. A carat can also be split into one hundred "points." A .75 carat diamond is the equivalent of a 75-points or 3/4 carat diamond. You would think that a one-carat diamond costs exactly twice the price of a half-carat diamond, right? Not so. Bigger diamonds are found less frequently in nature, which places them at the rarest level. A one-carat diamond will actually cost more than twice as much as a half-carat diamond (if the color, clarity and cut are nearly the same).
Flaws, or inclusions, are the natural identifying characteristics such as minerals or tiny hairline fractures that are formed while diamonds are smoldering inside the earth. Tiny crystals, clouds or feathers are some of the shapes an inclusion can resemble. In order to detect inclusions, jewelers must use a small magnifying instrument called a loupe. The position of the flaws affects the value of a diamond.
