Diamond Critique
Most often diamonds are evaluated by their color, cut, clarity and carat. We'd like to help clear up any ambiguities as to what these factors mean to you as a potential diamond buyer.
When cut of a diamond is mentioned it means how the angles and proportions are formed in the diamond. A well-cut diamond internally reflects light from one facet to another and disperses and reflects it through the top of the stone. The result is a showcase of brilliance and fire, which makes the diamond more desirable than deep or shallow-cut diamonds. The term "cut" also refers to the shape of a diamond. It can be round, square, pear, or heart, for example.
When people use the term carat they often confuse the size of a diamond to its actual meaning, the measure of weight. A carat is equal to two hundred milligrams. Carats can be split into one hundred "points." A .75 carat diamond is the same as a 75-points or 3/4 carat diamond. You might think that a one-carat diamond costs exactly twice the price of a half-carat diamond. That isn’t true because bigger diamonds are found less frequently in nature, which places them at the rarest level. A one-carat diamond will actually cost more than twice as much as a half-carat diamond (if the color, clarity and cut are nearly the same).
A diamond can range in color from totally clear to different shades of yellow. Warmer colored diamonds are predominantly desirable when set in yellow gold. Icy winter whites look striking set in white gold or platinum. Color differences can be extremely subtle. It‘s difficult to see the difference between somewhat differing grades. Colorless stones are valued for their rarity. Color, however, comes down to a person's taste when all is taken into consideration. The term "color" means the degree to which a diamond is lacking any color.
Things known to a layman as "flaws" are called "inclusions" by diamond experts. They're the natural identifying characteristics such as tiny hairline fractures or foreign minerals that appear while diamonds are being formed inside the earth. Some inclusions look like tiny crystals, wispy clouds or miniature feathers. To see inclusions, jewelers use a small magnifying instrument called a loupe. Where the flaws are located can affect the value of a diamond.
