How Diamonds Are Judged
Diamonds are evaluated by color, cut, clarity and carat according to certain industry standards. As a potential diamond purchaser, understanding the terminology will greatly assist you in making an educated diamond selection.
The cut of a diamond refers to the angles and proportions that defines the gemstone's shape. A well-cut diamond internally reflects light from one facet to another and disperses and reflects it through the top of the stone. The result is a display of brilliance and fire. Cut also relates to the shape of the diamond - round, square, pear, etc.
Carat does not indicate the size of a diamond, rather it is a measure of weight. A carat is comprised of one hundred "points." A .75 carat diamond is the equivalent of a 75-points or 3/4 carat diamond. You would think that a one-carat diamond costs exactly twice the price of a half-carat diamond, right? Not so. The bigger the diamond, the more rare it is, and consequently more valuable and expensive. A one carat diamond will actually cost more than twice as much as a half-carat diamond (if the color, clarity and cut are comparable).
The color of diamonds ranges from completely clear to different shades of yellow. Color differences can be extremely subtle. It is often quite difficult to discern the difference between slightly differing grades. While the more colorless stones are generally more valuable, it ultimately depends on personal preference as to which diamond is more desirable. Warmer colored diamonds are particularly beautiful when set in yellow gold. Icy winter whites look stunning set in white gold or platinum.
Clarity is judged by the number, size and position of inclusions. Inclusions are naturally occuring imperfections such as crystal, minerals and hairline fractures. To spot inclusions, jewelers use a small magnifying instrument called a loupe. Obviously, the more inclusions a diamond has, the less valuable and beautiful it is.
The Love Story Diamond brand is a nationwide symbol of diamond distinction and value. Visit your Love Story jeweler today and see for yourself!
