To fully appreciate what a diamond is and what it represents, it’s important to understand the concept of the 4 C's. These “C’s” are the clarity, the cut, the color and the carat-weight of a diamond. We’d like to help you understand what these factors mean to you as a diamond buyer.
The word “carat” is often confused with the size of a diamond, even though it is actually a measure of weight. One carat consists of one hundred "points." A .75 carat diamond is the same as a 75-points or a 3/4 carat diamond. Think that a 1.00 carat diamond costs exactly twice as much as a half-carat diamond? Wrong. Larger diamonds are found less frequently in nature, and this places them at a premium. A 1.00 carat diamond will cost more than twice as much as a 1/2-carat diamond (assuming color, clarity and cut are approximate).
Diamonds are graded on a color scale which ranges from D (colorless) to Z. They vary from completely clear to various shades of yellow. Color differences can be extremely subtle. It is hard to see the difference between an E and an F. Colors are graded under controlled lighting conditions and are compared to a master set for accuracy. Colorless stones, graded D, are valued for their rarity. Color, however, ultimately comes down to personal taste. Warmer colored diamonds (K-Z) are particularly beautiful when set in yellow gold. Icy winter whites (D-J) look stunning set in white gold or platinum.
A diamond's clarity, and ultimately it's value, is determined by the number and position of inclusions. Inclusions are naturally occuring imperfections such as minerals or miniature fractures. They may look like tiny crystals, clouds or feathers. To view inclusions, jewelers use a magnifying loupe. This tool allows them to see a diamond at ten times its actual size.
Cut refers to the angles and proportions of a diamond. A well-cut diamond will internally reflect light from one mirror-like facet to another and disperse and reflect it through the top of the stone. This results in a display of brilliance and fire. Cut also refers to the shape of a diamond. It can be round, square, pear, or heart shaped, for example. Since a round diamond is symmetrical and reflects nearly all the light that enters it, this cut is the most brilliant of all the diamond shapes.
The Leading Jewelers Guild has created its own line of fine diamond jewelry. Only members of the Guild, like Harry Ritchie's Jewelers and Morgan Jewelers are allowed to sell the jewelry. Called Love Story Diamonds, it was inspired by five classic stories of love that endured despite seemingly insurmountable odds. Say “I'm glad you're mine” with a pair of fabulous diamond earrings from one of the collections.
